CHAPTER 8

Jake had spent almost a year in solitude after his last deputy had retired, so the concept of a few days without Brady should not have hit him so hard. However, in only a couple of weeks, he had grown attached to the company. Not to mention, it was handy to have someone else there whenever someone like Gloria, who made no secret of wanting to win his affection, came in to flirt with him. Brady hadn’t even been gone a full day, but every time the door opened, Jake jumped, half expecting to be cornered. Fortunately, thus far he had been able to avoid such awkward situations—and he hoped his luck would hold. For some reason, Gloria in particular had grown bolder since Tonya and Lily had moved to town.

Maybe it was his imagination. In any case, with luck, she wouldn’t learn that Brady was gone until after he returned. And if he returned with good news regarding the Pittman case, all the better.

True to form, Jake jumped as the door opened to sweep in a gush of cold autumn air. He stood, his chair rolling behind him before coming to rest halfway to the vending machine at the back wall, ignored. As a tall woman slipped into the station, the tightness in his throat eased, and his shoulders relaxed.

Jordan. He shouldn’t feel this thrill at seeing her again, but he couldn’t help but let his gaze travel up and down her body as he soaked in her figure hidden beneath her winter outfit. That black leather coat she adored so much fit snug against the curve of her waist. She paired it with dark jeans that showed off her long, lean legs.

What was she doing here? He opened his mouth, but the moment he did, she turned skittish. She dropped her eyes, her thick eyelashes covering the stormy gray. Her black hair fell loose across her face as she looked down toward the papers she held in her hand. They crinkled in the silence of the room.

Maybe he had become so accustomed to putting on an impassive expression in case Gloria walked in that he’d automatically donned the demeanor meant to intimidate and dissuade potential flirts from wasting his time. He felt like an idiot. Swallowing hard and trying to look normal—though with her in the room, he’d forgotten how that felt—he waited for her to make the first move.

Looking unsure of herself, she stepped closer and slid the papers onto his desk. What had caused this change in her? Thus far when they had met, he had seen the confident side of her. The stubborn side. Even the side that tripped over her tongue whenever she tried to tell a lie. But this? She looked so vulnerable that he wanted to usher her behind him and search for the threat. He hadn’t felt that instant knee-jerk response to protect a woman in a long time.

After all, he was a world away from his deployment days.

When Jordan
